SMA has prepared school Travel Plans for a number of schools across Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Surrey. These have been in varying locations, from urban areas to remote rural sites.
As an example, Guildford High School for Girls was required to prepare and implement a Travel Plan to support an application to amend an existing section 106 agreement which would increase the number of pupils attending the school. Preparing the Travel Plan involved conducting a travel survey of all pupils to establish current travel modes, which achieved a 98% response rate. Subsequent initiatives were then identified to encourage sustainable travel. The school has been proactive in implementing a number of initiatives, including: a rewards scheme for walking to school; personal travel planning for all new pupils; provision of reflective tabards to all junior school pupils; offering breakfast to encourage active travel; Travel Information Packs for all pupils; setting up a school lift share database and encouraging county cycle training schemes.
SMA is currently the Travel Plan Coordinator for Frimley Business Park in Surrey. The main objective of the Travel Plan seeks to reduce the reliance on car travel to the site and encourage use of sustainable modes of travel.
The implementation of the plan has required consultation with the business park occupants, the management company and both Hampshire County Council and Surrey County Council. To market the travel opportunities, a website has been developed by SMA where all employees can access information about travelling to/from the site. Other initiatives include offering employees a Travel Information Pack and reflective tabards to increase safety if walking and cycling to the site.
As a result of discussions with the site occupants it has emerged that there is the opportunity to link up current shuttle bus/taxi services to provide a central and more cost-effective shuttle bus service for employees and improve access to local rail stations.
